The United States secured its position as leader of the West. Stalin constructed barriers to prevent the movement of United States to West Berlin in response to the Western approach to consolidate West Germany, Truman continued the supply by flying over the barriers in 1948-49.The United States formed a coalition group with the Western European States as per the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949,forming the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).Stalin retaliated by consolidating the Eastern bloc in an execution of the Marshall Plan led by Soviet Union, the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON),and used its first atomic bomb in 1949.
In 1949, the United States led in the formation of West Germany from its three western regions occupied followed by the Soviet Union's declaration of the regions occupied by it in Germany as the German Democratic Republic. In the beginning phase of 1950s, United States helped in developing an armed West Germany again, and becoming permanent member of NATO in 1955.
In 1949 United States led Kuomintang group lost to Mao's Red army in China. Soon after this, the Soviet Union formed a coalition group with the new People's Republic of China. Few Truman's officials were convinced to extend the "containment" policy after dealing with the Chinese revolution and an end of United States atomic supremacy in 1949.In a hidden 1950 record, NSC-68,the administrators offered to bring Western coalition systems into effect and increase defense spending up to four times. Truman opposed NSC 68 & wanted to reduce military spending. But the Korean War moved Truman to implement NSC 68 to retaliate to the Soviet Union's strategy to use army for succeeding.
Later, United States leaders were convinced to extend 'containment' policy to Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The communist led Socialist Movements opposed reformation of Europe's territorial colonies in Southeast Asia. In the early 1950s, United States formally organized a group with Japan assuring the use of Washington long-span military camps and later Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and the Philippines were convinced to join the group.
